The current weather forecast for Koh Lanta varies very little form the general weather forecast for the entire Krabi Area or even Phuket because all are located around one bay - Phanga Bay of the Andaman Sea.
When to visit Koh Lanta
Weather-wise, the ideal time to visit Koh Lanta is in late January and February, and most of March. Nearly perfect weather conditions: calm seas, clear blue sky, and moderate temperatures (relative to South Thailand). But there is always a chance of shower burst. By coming at this time, you also avoid the "peak season" hotel rates specially priced for Christmas and New Years Thailand holiday travelers.
Some people prefer to visit Koh Lanta in the 'rainy' season. Despite the risk of showers, people prefer the "green season" because it is cooler, cheaper and much less crowded in Koh Lanta.
Koh Lanta holidays from May until late October are a gamble. The typical rainy season pattern is of sunny days punctuated by short, but very heavy afternoon showers. I have seen 7 days of straight sunshine in the rainy season BUT I have also seen 8 days of straight sun! In general Koh Lanta gets 1 day of uninterupted sunshine for every 2 days of rain showers. So 1 out of 3 days will be nice in Koh Lanta during the rainy season.
General climate in Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is in a tropical climate zone, only 8 degrees above the equator. There are two seasons here: hot and dry; and cool(less hot) and wet and the temperature rarely drops below 27C year round. There can be rain during the 'dry' season, particularly at the start, as well gloriously sunny spells for sometimes for a week during the height of 'rainy' season. The only weather that can be guaranteed during the year are dry heatwaves in March and April (up to 37C).
Yearly temperatures in Krabi average around 28-32C during the day, with a maximum of around 36C during March and April and a minimum of 20C but only a temporary drop during very big rainstorms. During the nights, the Koh Lanta temperature drops around 5-10C from what it was that day.
Koh Lanta humidity levels are high throughout the year ranging from 75% to 100%.
The Koh Lanta sea temperature is a very pleasant 28-30C all year round.
